Mixed-Effects Models for Cognitive Development Researchers

نویسندگان

چکیده

Mixed-effects models are an analytic technique for modeling repeated measurement or nested data. This paper explains the logic of mixed-effects and describes two examples analyses using R. The intended audience is psychologists who specialize in cognitive development research. Therefore, concepts covered will focus primarily on repeated-measurement data resulting from studies which participants respond to multiple items trials. However, many we cover likely be use readers outside this area psychology. Finally, discuss recommendations dealing with practical challenges, suggest approaches troubleshooting, provide guidance reporting results models.

Functional mixed effects models.

In this article, a new class of functional models in which smoothing splines are used to model fixed effects as well as random effects is introduced. The linear mixed effects models are extended to nonparametric mixed effects models by introducing functional random effects, which are modeled as realizations of zero-mean stochastic processes. The fixed functional effects and the random functiona...

Mixed Effects Cox Models

Like many other projects, this software library started with a data set and a problem. From this came statistical ideas for a solution, followed by some initial programming — which more than anything else helped to define the real computational and statistical issues — and then a more ambitious programming solution. The problem turned out to be harder than I thought; the first release-worthy co...

Bilinear Mixed-Effects Models for Affiliation Networks

An affiliation network is a particular kind of two-mode social network that consists of a set of ‘actors’ and a set of ‘events’ where ties indicate an actor’s participation in an event. While event affiliations are fundamental in defining the social identity of individuals, statistical methods for studying affiliation networks are less well developed than methods for studying one-mode, or actor...

Model Building for Nonlinear Mixed-Effects Models

Nonlinear mixed-effects models involve both fixed effects and random effects. Model building for nonlinear mixed-effects models is the process of determining the characteristics of both the fixed and the random effects so as to give an adequate but parsimonious model. We describe procedures based on information criterion statistics for comparing different structures of the random effects compon...

Bayesian Mixed-Effects Models for Recommender Systems

We propose a Bayesian methodology for recommender systems that incorporates user ratings, user features, and item features in a single unified framework. In principle our approach should address the cold-start issue and can address both scalability issues as well as sparse ratings. However, our early experiments have shown mixed results.
